Marie Dressler Celebration Day
Come and be part of the Marie Dressler Celebration Day on November 9, 2024 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the Citizens' Forum, 2nd Floor, Victoria Hall, 55 King Street West, Cobourg.
On this day, we celebrate the 156th birthday of Cobourg-born Marie Dressler with a film "The Patsy", and refreshments.
Opening remarks by Mayor Lucas Cleveland and Rick Miller, President & Chair of the Board, Marie Dressler Foundation.
The Patsy, directed by King Vidor, was Marie Dressler's final silent film before she transitioned to the 'talkies", and is perhaps her finest performance in a silent film. Marie plays the mother of Marion Davies who turns in a stellar performance as an awkward teenager, Pat, hopelessly in love with her older sister's boyfriend. Marion Davies expertly impersonates movie stars Mae Murray, Pola Negri, and Lillian Gish in an attempt to gain his attention.
Marie Dressler would go on to a breakthrough performance in talkies with her role in Min and Bill earning her an Academy Award for Best Actress in 1931.
