Farley Mowat's - And No Birds Sang
by Dave Carley
He was peach-faced, virginal, and boyishly eager to battle fascism. In 1940, Farley Mowat enlisted with the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment – the famous ‘Hasty Ps’ – and set off to war. The young lieutenant was one of the first to land in the Allied invasion of Sicily - a physically and mentally taxing campaign. Mowat described his war service in his memoir And No Birds Sang. It’s a haunting, honest and sometimes hilarious account of a brave young man confronting and overcoming his worst fears.
Now in its second season, the Creators’ Unit is a diverse group of writers and creators from across the region who are collaborating with the Capitol to create new work for the stage. We hope that our Creators’ Unit will lead to world premiere productions on both of our stages, inspire local arts professionals to create new work for this community, and create connections between the broader arts community and Northumberland County.
