Lessons from Providence
by Celia McBride
Beth Little is a chaplain providing spiritual care to residents at Providence Manor, a long-term care home in a small town in Ontario. Lucy Baxter, a resident, decides she wants to die by medical assistance and asks for Beth’s support. When Reverend Rick, Lucy’s former pastor, accuses Beth of promoting death rather than life, Beth is forced to question her values and role in the home. “Lessons from Providence” is a heartfelt and humorous play about life and death and the freedom to choose our own exit strategy.
Now in its second season, the Creators’ Unit is a diverse group of writers and creators from across the region who are collaborating with the Capitol to create new work for the stage. We hope that our Creators’ Unit will lead to world premiere productions on both of our stages, inspire local arts professionals to create new work for this community, and create connections between the broader arts community and Northumberland County.
